Opportunities and resources for composers

This resource is a non-exhaustive list of opportunities, networks, venues, ensembles, record labels and events which may wish to engage composers in commissions or partnership work. It is designed to serve as a starting point. Building relationships with performers and venues is equally important. We have also included some ISM resources to help you further.

Ada Witczyk: Ruzickova Composition Competition

Applications are now open for the Ruzickova Composition Competition, and judges are looking for short pieces written for baroque string quartet of between four to six minutes in length. Winning compositions will be published and recorded in video performances.

Noisy Nights at sound: Call for Scores

If you are an emerging or amateur neurodiverse composer (18+ years old) and interested in writing for Red Note, submit an original work of less than five minutes in length for the chance to be heard via a livestreamed broadcast or at a small concert in Aberdeen. Instrumentation is the clarinet, violin, viola and cello.

Wild Plum Arts: Artists residency

Wild Plum Arts are hosting their third August residency with the support and collaboration of The Ivors Academy. Free accommodation, meals, and private workspaces are offered for up to six artists per week during the month of august, and each residency is for six nights. Applications are open to artists who are at a professional level and involved in the creation of new musical works.

O/Modernt Composition Award

O/Modernt has announced their annual Composition Award (2021). The theme of the award is: NATURE and the CITY. The winning work will be premiered in 2021 in Manchester and there is a monetary price.

BMA offering paid commission for remembrance tribute

The BMA are looking for proposals to commission a composition in tribute to the healthcare workers who were victims of COVID-19. The composition must be eight minutes in length and can be for any medium, including instrumental, choral, and solo voice.

    Faber Music and Sound and Music

    Faber Music and Sound and Music have announced a new partnership offering ten Faber Music Bursaries available to young composers and music creators to attend the Sound and Music Summer School in 2021.

    Sound World

    Sound World provides numerous opportunities for young and early career composers including professional public performances, commissions, composition workshops and an annual young composers’ competition.
