Over 400 music education professionals, including many ISM members, have written a joint letter to The Times calling on the government to support and encourage music education in all schools, irrespective of their status, over the catch-up period. The letter follows on from last week's government guidance on schools returning in September, which advises that in certain circumstances some subjects can be suspended and some GCSEs can be dropped.

'While attention is rightly focused on the music industry in its hour of need, without support for music education any intervention to save music in our country will rest on the weakest of foundations. Government guidance emphasising a commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum is welcome, as is the clarification that subjects should be suspended or GCSEs dropped only in exceptional circumstances. But with the marginalisation of music education over many years —a consequence of de-funding and policy changes, including the EBacc— some schools may still struggle to deliver ‘non-core’ subjects over the next two terms. The government must not sit idly by while music education suffers. All schools, irrespective of their status, should be given the fullest encouragement and significant support from government to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum, with music at its heart. Creativity, which makes us who we are, must be the fuel that feeds the catch-up in our schools.'
