Music education hub funding: letter to The Times

Sir, Thousands of jobs are at risk in the music education sector. The funding settlement for music education hubs runs until March 31 next year and further funding is yet to be confirmed, creating huge uncertainty for peripatetic teachers. The hubs were set up in 2012 as part of the National Plan for Music Education. They have provided children and young people with musical learning opportunities beyond the national curriculum, including learning an instrument. Without government support this work would not have been possible.

However, the hubs are under significant financial pressure due to inflation and higher employer contributions to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, plus, for many hubs, obligatory above-inflation increases to teachers’ pay. Therefore we ask that government confirm its commitment to music education hubs as soon as possible and, in recognition of increased costs, that the funding be increased to at least £100 million per annum for the next five years.

Music education in the classroom is already in crisis. Without this funding, additional provision will also either be drastically cut or parents and schools will face the rising costs.
