ISM writes to Foreign Secretary to ask for support for Afghan musicians

ISM chief executive Deborah Annetts has written to the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to ask him to ensure safe passage for musicians under threat in Afghanistan.

The world has watched on in horror as recent events have unfolded in Afghanistan and the music community in the country are fearful for their futures.

There are widespread reports coming from Afghanistan that the Taliban plan on banning music once more, as they did in 1996.

One popular folk singer, Fawad Andarabi, has been tragically killed by the Taliban and the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul has fallen silent.

There are concerns that there could be repercussions for those that have taught, studied or performed music in Afghanistan under previous laws.

The ISM has called on the Foreign Secretary to work to secure safe passage for musicians under threat in Afghanistan and to make a clear statement that nobody should be persecuted or considered a criminal for performing or listening to music.
