ISM statement on the new Centre for Music in London

The ISM has responded to the announcement of the new Centre for Music in London.

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) said:

‘We welcome the new Centre for Music and the innovative vision of the team leading its creation. We are looking forward to it making an immense contribution to the cultural life of our great city and in the wider context of music education. However, whilst the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) continues to exclude creative subjects, music education in our secondary schools will continue to disappear, and we are concerned that the talent for the future will just not materialise. Government must ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to pursue the arts regardless of their background, and we urge them to rethink the EBacc before music and the arts become the preserve of only those who can afford it.'
