ISM letter to Cabinet Office requesting clarification on education and training exemption
The ISM has written a letter to Cabinet Office Minister, Michael Gove requesting clarification on the education and training exemption in the new national restriction legislation and how this relates to private music tuition.
The letter seeks answers to the following questions:
- can the government explain why there is now a specific ban in the guidance on private music tuition when this is not in the legal provisions?
- can the government explain why the contradiction that currently allows instrumental teachers in schools to carry on under DfE guidelines, but leaves those doing the same work in a private context unable to support their pupils?
- In order to prevent confusion from conflicting information, please can the government confirm if private music teaching is classed as “education or training” and therefore continues to be exempt from the legal restriction on household mixing?
