Eavesdropping Symposium

The sounding body: site of trouble and transcendence

Eavesdropping is a performance series and a symposium dedicated to new music, curated by soprano Juliet Fraser.

The third season runs as a week-long, online festival and culminates in a two-day symposium, which will be an opportunity to reflect together on the sounding body: site of trouble and transcendence. The symposium is designed to be open, inclusive and positive in its approach to this theme: the programme will feature a variety of papers, presentations, performances and discussions.

In normal times, the symposium is held in the wooden chapel at Oxford House in East London; this season, we will assemble online (via Zoom and YouTube) and follow a reduced programme.

Keynote speakers;

  • Laura Bowler (composer/vocalist)
  • Winnie Huang (violinist/violist/gestural performance artist)

    The programme will also include a selection of shorter contributions, gathered through this Call for Papers, several Q&As and a round-table discussion exploring ‘matters arising’.

    This Call for Papers is an invitation to writers, thinkers, researchers, performers and composers to join the conversation. A ‘paper’ might be a talk, a presentation of another kind, a lecture-recital, a performance, or something else entirely: what it should be is no longer than 20 minutes in length. Papers might, for example, explore such topics as:

    • Embodied practices
    • Diverse physicalities
    • Consent in collaboration
    • Technology and the body
    • The future of live performance.

    All papers will need to be pre-recorded (whether as an audio file or a video) and will then be uploaded to YouTube.

    Applicants are encouraged to explore the eavesdropping website. Please note that the general atmosphere is intimate and low-key — this is a venture run by artists for artists, not an academic colloquium. The main objective of the symposium is to foster community and fruitful debate.
