What is Record Store Day?
Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record shops. It is the one day of the year when 250 record shops come together to celebrate their unique culture and independence. Hundreds of artists come together to release special, limited edition vinyl releases for the participating shops. Record shops celebrate all around the globe by hosting parties, in-store performances and live events for their customers.
Record Store Day is about championing their originality, independence and the unsung heroes behind the counter who work hard to keep their doors open every day of the year. Though there is a still a long way to go, the success of the event has sparked a huge turnaround in fortunes for the nation’s independent record stores, with new shops opening at nearly one a week since last year’s Record Store Day. And vinyl continues in popularity as the latest market stats show that over 4m vinyl records were sold in 2018 – that’s the highest volume since the early 90s. That marks more than 10 years of growth for the much loved format.
250 independent retailers will be taking part in Record Store Day this year. That’s the highest number since Record Store Day began. You can find a record shop near you using the Record Store Day store locator.
There are hundreds of special releases making their way into independent record shops including from the likes of IDLES, Courtney Barnett, Rolling Stones, Slowthai, Prince and Julien Baker.
