Make Music Day 2019
Make Music Day is a global celebration of music that takes place on 21 June each year. The UK will be joining over 120 countries in a spectacular summer solstice celebration open to all.
This inclusive global festival brings vibrant live music performances to everyone in the community. All events are free to attend and surprise performances pop up in all kinds of public spaces, from trains to hospitals, bringing unexpected musical experiences and unusual genres to new audiences. Everyone can host an event regardless of whether you would class yourself as professional or amateur musician, whether you are young or old. The aim of the event is to share the joy of music by transforming public spaces with an array of live music performances designed to surprise, inspire and delight.
In 2018 there were 558 free performances in the UK involving nearly 7,000 performers who brought new musical experiences to more than 100,000 people. The concept originates from France as Fête de la Musique that started in 1982. It has now grown to encompass two thirds of the French population each year through 19,000 annual events. This feel good festival has now spread across the world, from China to Argentina.
At the official launch, Barbara Eifler, Co-chair of Make Music Day UK, said:
“We are delighted to see communities across the UK embrace the opportunity to be part the world’s biggest participatory music festival. In just two years since starting to coordinate this festival in the UK, we are already reaching over 100,000 people. Last year nearly 7,000 musicians shared their talents and this year will be even bigger! Make Music Day is a chance for everyone to share and celebrate their kind of music with new people and be part of something bigger. It’s about shining a spotlight on all the amazing music which is part of every area and every community, but often hidden.”
