Celebrating International Jazz Day

Friday 30 April 2021 is International Jazz Day, and we are taking the opportunity to celebrate jazz musicians. We've dived into the ISM archive to pull together some fascinating interviews and blogs, as well as a performance from 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, Xhosa Cole, and highlight a couple of special discounts for ISM members.

Interviews and blogs

A hundred years of jazz

In what has been described as the hundredth anniversary of jazz, jazz musician and Jazz 100 director Dave Morecroft, along with musicians Kim Macari, Zara MacFarlane and Peter Edwards, reflect on three of ‘the scene’s’ greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk in their centenary year.

Xhosa Cole Quartet

The Xhosa Cole Quartet, performing at ISM Members' Day 2019 at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The recording features two arrangements from Xhosa Cole - Gershwin's Summertime and Thelonious Monk's Played Twice, as well as Xhosa's own composition Moving Ladywood.

Born in Handsworth, Birmingham, Xhosa Cole won the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year award in 2018, and was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year in the 2020 Jazz FM awards.
