NAYO ceases operations as ABO steps in to help

25 June 2010

This week the National Association of Youth Orchestras (NAYO) will be wound up having ceased operations on 31 March. The Board of Directors agreed to wind up the company on 30 June at a meeting on 22 May. At the meeting the board highlighted the many achievements of the organisation since it was founded well over 40 years ago and drank a toast to the many young players in our youth orchestras today.

NAYO founded well over 40 years ago was forced to wind up its operations from 31 March following a funding shortfall of £50,000 reported in the March edition of Music Journal. The company which operated the association will cease on June 30.

The Chair of NAYO, ISM member George Caird, announced the decision earlier in the year in a letter to members citing the 'recent unexpected decision of a majot public funding body to withdraw all ongoing funding' and the 'growing financial and organisational challenge'.

ISM corporate members, the Association of British Orchestras (ABO), have announced that they are keen to take on the role of advocate for the Youth Orchestra movement in the UK. The ABO is also 'looking at a range of other membership opportunities that could be provided to support the Youth orchestra movement'.
