Composers' notesCOMPOSERS have a new set of notes, with the publication of the ISM’s advice on Composition Commissions.

The Incorporated Society of Musicians – the UK’s professional body for performers, composers and music teachers – is expanding its range of information sheets to provide advice to composers considering a commission.

The new publication answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the business of writing music, including advice on rights, copyright, licensing, fees and collecting royalties. John McLeod

The advice was drawn up under the guidance of the ISM’s Performers & Composers Section committee. Composer John McLeod (left) helped with the drafting:

We have worked very hard to produce what we feel is a very valuable information sheet. It addresses the most important issues composers should consider before they accept a commission – but ISM members can be reassured that more complex questions can be answered by the experts at ISM Head Office.

ISM members can obtain professional advice on any potential contract from the Society’s legal team.

The ISM publishes a range of information sheets for professional musicians, on subjects from debt recovery and child protection to music for weddings and professional fees. Many of the sheets are available to the public at ism.org/info, with members able to access the full range by logging in to the Members’ Area of the website.

You can read the new publication on Composition Commissions here. Printed copies can be requested from ISM Head Office.
