Music in Mind: Images & Reflections, a one-day ISM seminar for instrumental and vocal teachers at the University of Westminster on Saturday 29 September 2007, will be chaired by Charlotte Ellis, Warden of the ISM’s Private Teachers Section for 2007-08.

The seminar will include presentations, talks and workshops exploring various dimensions of music teaching.

Ulrich Gerhartz, chief technician at Steinway & Sons, will start the day with a demonstration of the mechanics of the piano within the long history of the firm and the instrument’s pivotal role in 19th and 20th century music-making. Jeanne Dolmetsch will give a talk on the life and work of her grandfather, Arnold Dolmetsch, underlining the importance of music of earlier periods to instrumental teaching. After lunch, Dr Warwick Onyeama will give a session on meditation and its relevance for musicians, drawing on some fascinating recent medical developments in brain imaging. The day will end with a recital of music from the baroque to the 20th century performed by Jeanne Dolmetsch (recorders) and Nigel Foster (harpsichord).

Charlotte Ellis (left) said:

This seminar introduces a number of interlinked themes which I regard as important in modern music teaching. It is designed to provide an opportunity – perhaps all too rare in today’s world – for reflection, as well as some food for thought and for the ear.’
