Musicians and hearing

The regulations protecting workers in the ‘music and entertainment sector’ from exposure to noise fell into line on 6 April 2008 with a European Directive (2003/10/EC) which had been in force in other workplaces since 2006. Noise regulations are not new – controls have been in existence since 1989 – but the regulations now in force include two action levels for noise exposure which are five decibels (dB) lower than previously. Effectively, and because of the way that noise is measured, this represents a drop of 69% on the previous levels.
No written teaching agreement – no comeback

Caroline Aldred, the ISM’s Legal Services Manager, explores some of the pitfalls which can be encountered when instrumental teachers fail to sign a written contract with their pupils or their parents. A written agreement such as the ISM’s Agreement for Private Music Tuition reduces risks in a number of ways.
Tafahum: East meets West

Tafahum (Arabic for understanding) took place on 7 July 2008 at St John’s, Smith Square, London. Composer/conductor Benjamin Ellin introduces the project, which brought together the EMFEB Symphony Orchestra, the Sufi Band Al-farabi, and music students from the Pembroke Academy of Music.
