ISM Chief Executive appointed chair of MEC

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) has been elected to serve as Chair of the Music Education Council (MEC) for the next three years.

MEC is the UK’s umbrella body for all organisations involved with music education. With over 100 member organisations, MEC lobbies and advocates on behalf of music education. The ISM is the professional body for musicians in the UK, representing the interests of over 5,500 members through campaigns, legal support and advice.

John Witchell, from the Federation of Music Services and former MEC Chair stated: ‘I am delighted with the appointment of Deborah Annetts as the new Chair of the Music Education Council. It is vital that the music education sector presents a united voice to decision makers during these challenging times, and Deborah’s wealth of experience and knowledge in campaigning will greatly assist MEC in reaching our aim of developing a sustainable and inclusive music education system.’

Deborah Annetts said: ‘Congratulations to everyone who stood for election and thank you to those who voted for me. I am delighted to have been elected and am looking forward to working with the music education sector and beyond to promote what we do.’

‘The Music Education Council plays a vital role in supporting all aspects of music education. I look forward to working closely with the Executive Committee and the MEC membership to develop partnerships and make the case for music education in all its forms.’

Karen Brock from Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service has also been elected as Vice-Chair. Deborah Annetts takes over from John Witchell, Chief Executive of the Federation of Music Services.

2. The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) is the UK’s professional body for musicians.
