ISM Members Fund: how you can help

The Members Fund is not financed in any way by members’ annual subscriptions. Rather, it has been able to support musicians and their families through hard times thanks to the generous donations and legacies of people like you who want to help musicians in need.

The Fund needs your support now to be able to continue its work of supporting musicians in the future.

Leaving a legacy

Leaving a legacy to the ISM Members Fund is a wonderful way of continuing to help your fellow musicians who are experiencing difficulties. Remember that when a freelance musician is unable to work because of injury or ill-health, their world can start to fall apart. The Members Fund can help them to put the pieces back together.

Because the Members Fund is a charity, there are tax advantages in leaving a legacy to the Fund. If the total value of your estate is over the threshold for inheritance tax, leaving the Fund a bequest may reduce the inheritance tax bill on your entire estate. Your lawyer will be able to advise you on a suitable form of words.

Your lawyer will need to know that the formal name of the ISM Members Fund is the Benevolent Fund of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and that its charity registration number is 206801.

If you have other questions about making a bequest to the Member Fund, please contact the Head of Members Fund Operations, Caroline Aldred, at or on 020 7313 9310.

You may also like to organise a fundraising event for the Fund. For example, members have raised money for the Fund by running a marathon, doing a sponsored cycle ride or giving a concert with fellow musicians. You don’t have to be as adventurous as that. You can raise money for the Fund in easier ways, perhaps within your local ISM group by adding a small amount to the ticket price for pupils’ concerts or holding raffles or music sales at local ISM events.

ISM Members Fund is the working name of the Benevolent Fund of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, registered charity no. 206801.
