Musicians and hearing

The regulations protecting workers in the ‘music and entertainment sector’ from exposure to noise fell into line on 6 April 2008 with a European Directive (2003/10/EC) which had been in force in other workplaces since 2006. Noise regulations are not new – controls have been in existence since 1989 – but the regulations now in force include two action levels for noise exposure which are five decibels (dB) lower than previously. Effectively, and because of the way that noise is measured, this represents a drop of 69% on the previous levels.
